Friday’s Tradition

Whilst Bristol’s Harbourside is ever-changing, some things at Underfall Yard have remained perfectly the same. For many years now, Fridays at the Yard have bought with them fried breakfasts, door stop sandwiches and a tradition of celebrating the end of the week by sitting down and sharing a greasy, well-deserved meal. James Clarke started working at Underfall Yard in 1998, as a boat builder and [...]

Photo Trekking with Adventurous Activity Company

In 2017, Adventurous Activity Company took many groups onto the water in canoes and kayaks as well as delivering their popular raft building challenges. The challenge involves teams of around 4 or 5 designing, building and racing rafts constructed from barrels, wooden poles and ropes. Success was mixed with disaster: it’s safe to say that the boat builders at Underfall Yard needn’t worry about competition! [...]

Classic Boat Award Nominations for Yard Businesses

Every year since 2007, Classic Boat has celebrated the best restorations, newly built boats, people and more, in the wonderful world of traditional vessels and the people who make them float.  The boats and people shortlisted this year include nominees from the yard. You can vote once in each category, and we would strongly recommend voting for: Bristol 32 & 16 for Powered Vessel – New [...]

RB Boatbuilding’s Jonathan Livingston launched!

Over the last few days we have had the yard gates lock whilst RB Boatbuilding were launching their latest pilot cutter.  Jonathan Livingston was taken out of the Big Shed on Friday 15 September and the crane arrived early Monday morning to get her into the harbour. We have captured much of the build using a time-lapse camera, which was purchased with support from the [...]

Star Yacht’s Annabel launched!

Today, the yard gates were locked whilst a very exciting and dangerous operation was carried out.  Star Yacht's launched Annabel.  She was craned into the water and doesn't she look marvellous.  She will only be with us for a short while (approximately 10 days) so if you want to see her, get down to the yard quickly for a sneak peak. To find out more [...]

Visitor Centre turns 1

A year ago, on 18 March 2016, we opened the doors of the Visitor Centre to the public for the very first time.  On that first day, our volunteers braved the cold and rain to meet and greet members of the public.  Ever since then, our wonderful and dedicated volunteers have greeted over 72,000 visitors by giving 5,000 hours of their time. Our volunteers are amazing: we are regularly [...]

Bristol Ferry on the slip

Bristol Ferry's Independence arrived today at Underfall Yard for essential maintenance. She was built in 1927 to work the shallow waters of the River Severn and Wye.  For a time Independence worked on the Erewash Canal in Derbyshire, built by the famous canal and harbour engineer William Jessop who was the main designer of Bristol Floating Harbour.  She also spent some time working in the [...]

Matthew on The Slip

Up on the patent slipway is the Matthew of Bristol.  She is having maintenance work done and she was supposed to stay with us until 13th January. Unfortunately for her (but luckily for us!) she needs a bit more of repair done, as they have to replace more planks than expected. Therefore, she is going to stay with us a little bit longer (until the end [...]

Rachel, a mechanical engineer, started working at Underfall Yard Trust this year as our Workshop Manager.   Last year she began volunteering at Clifton Suspension Bridge and her experience there led to a career change, which brought her to the yard.  And it is for that volunteering that she has won the South West category of the prestigious ‘Volunteers for Museum Learning’ award.
